In July 2001, during a morning segment on Good Day New York about a spat between a building manager and his tenants in relation to an out-of-service elevator, anchor Jim Ryan and chief reporter Dick Oliver proceeded to hurl insults back and forth while live on air. The on-air exchange turned sour after Oliver, having been told in his earpiece to cut the interview short, threw the telecast back to Ryan in the studio before he had obtained the opinion of a dismayed female tenant at the scene.
It becomes clear during the heated exchange that Dick Oliver was once Jim Ryan’s boss, a fact to which Oliver alludes amidst the argument. Jim Ryan responds: “Yeah, you were, and are no longer. How did that happen?”
