Comedic Performances To Remember #1: Lloyd Bridges – “Admiral/President Benson” (Hot Shots! / Hot Shots! Part Deux)

(Warning: Some strong language)

Admiral/President Thomas “Tug” Benson is a character played by legendary television and film actor Lloyd Bridges — who starred in more than 150 feature films during his illustrious career — in Hot Shots! (1991) and Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993), both of which are spoof films directed by Jim Abrahams (of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker, creators of Airplane! and The Naked Gun).

For his role of Admiral/President Benson, that of a clumsy, incompetent klutz who has somehow successfully climbed the ranks of the US Navy and become President of the United States of America, Bridges’ flawless comedic timing and deadpan humour were nothing short of superlative, with an ability to play the fall guy on a whim.

In 1998, only 5 years after the release of Hot Shots! Part Deux, Lloyd Bridges died of natural causes at the age of 85.
