Elvis Presley Delivers A Formidable Rendition of “Unchained Melody” Two Months Before His Death

On June 21, 1977, while unknowingly in the midst of his final tour, Elvis Presley embarked upon Rapid City, South Dakota. It was here that Presley — 42 years old, battling prescription drug abuse, and barely sleeping — delivered a majestic, awe-inspiring rendition of “Unchained Melody”, one which was fitting for the King of Rock and Roll and reminiscent of Presley at his absolute best.

Following Rapid City, the tour managed to continue for another five shows, the last of which — at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana — saw Elvis Presley bow out of a superlative career, during which he starred in 31 feature films, sold over 1 billion records worldwide, and won three Grammy Awards, with “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”.

He would die less than two months later from cardiovascular disease.
