Nina Simone – Ain’t Got No, I Got Life (Live In London 1968)

In the following 4-minute clip, which was recorded in 1968, Nina Simone, a singer-songwriter/civil rights activist who excelled in a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, blues, pop, folk, classical and gospel, performs one of her greatest hits, “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life”, while in London.

A medley of two songs from the hit musical Hair, “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life” epitomised the struggle to end the racial segregation and discrimination that were rife in the US at the time, with the 1960s playing host to the civil rights movement and Simone, who was born in South Carolina and raised in North Carolina, ultimately being a civil rights spokesperson.
