In a clip taken from the 19th November 1999 episode of the U.S. version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, John Carpenter, an IRS agent from Massachusetts, uses his Phone-A-Friend lifeline, while on the $1,000,000 question, to call his father, the result of which is Carpenter explaining to his father that he doesn’t need his help, as he is about to take down the top prize.
Arrogant? Audacious? I think not. What Carpenter does, much to the surprise of the presenter, Regis Philbin, and the audience, is simply cool and collected. His win ultimately led to national recognition and multiple chat show appearances.
