Janis Joplin – Cry Baby (Live in Toronto 1970)

In footage taken from Toronto’s leg of 1970’s Festival Express, a musical train tour across Canada featuring such North American rock acts as Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Band, and Buddy Guy, Joplin, who was 27 at the time, unleashes her greatest-ever performance of Cry Baby, her magnum opus.

This blistering performance, while certainly memorable, will ultimately be overshadowed later that year, when, in October, Joplin dies of a heroin overdose at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood. Even more significant was that Joplin entered the “27 club”, a term which refers to a long list of popular musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse, who died at the age of 27.
